An Iranian Journalist “Had” Hope
By: Solmaz Sharif
Iranian journalist, Saiede Eslamie, wrote the following on her Facebook on May 10, 2012, to show the effect a decade of changes on Iranian activists.
“My English teacher taught the past tense in class today. She was trying to engage us in the conversation. She asked me, ‘What were you doing ten years ago? What did you have back then that you don’t have now?’
“I tried to answer the question when I realized I was crying. Ten years ago the reformists were in office. All my friends were in Iran. Beloved ones were not in prison. We wouldn’t start our mornings with bad news. We didn’t have the Green Movement’s martyrs. We had hope back then.”
