Flash mob: Activists Break into Dance for Saudi Women

On March 8, 2012, Amnesty International celebrated International Women’s Day by campaigning for reforms in Saudi Arabia regarding women’s right to drive and the guardianship system. Acting in solidarity with women rights activists in Saudi Arabia, public campaigns and activities were setup around the world, but the flash mob carried by locals outside the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Paraguay gained the most attention.

People gathered outside the embassy to raise awareness about the guardianship system currently in place - one that requires a man to “approve” a woman to travel. With the catchphrase, “We support Saudi Arabian women to drive their way to freedom,” it wasn’t long before international activists documented the movement through Youtube, Facebook and Twitter.
