Video can be a very powerful medium to engage existing supporters and attract new ones. It’s an easy way to share about events happening on the ground and to communicate with a wider audience. YouTube, owned by Google, is the most popular video-sharing site in the world. It is estimated that people watch 2 billion videos a day on YouTube. This how to guide will explain how to upload a video to YouTube from a computer.
STEP 1.
You will need to set up an account to upload videos to YouTube. It’s quick and easy to create one.
Point your browser to: http://www.youtube.com/
In the upper right hand corner, click “Create an Account.”
STEP 2.
Fill in the necessary information to create an account. Create a username, select your location, provide additional personal information, read the terms of agreement, and then click “I Accept.”

Your username will become your YouTube URL. For example, AYM’s username is “youthmovements,” so our URL is http://www.youtube.com/youthmovements
STEP 3.
You will be directed to a new page asking if you already have a Google account. If you do have one, enter you account email and password to add YouTube to your Google account. Don’t have a Google account? No worries. Just add a personal email address, create a password, and click “Create New Account and Finish.”
STEP 4.
You will need to check your email and open a confirmation email from YouTube. Click on the link in the email to confirm your YouTube account. You will be re-directed to the YouTube homepage. You are ready to go!
STEP 5.
Now it’s time to upload a video from your computer to YouTube. By creating an account, you will have your own “channel” on YouTube. Think of this channel as your own profile page on YouTube. To upload a video, click “Upload” to the right of the main search bar at the top of the page.

Your video file must be either .mov, .avi, .mpeg, or a .wmv file extension. Your video can be no longer than 10 minutes and no larger than 1GB in size.
STEP 6.
Upload a video already saved on your computer by clicking the yellow “Upload video” button.
STEP 7.
Locate the video file on your computer, then click “Open.” Depending on how long your video is, it will take YouTube a few seconds or minutes to upload your video.
STEP 8.
Now, add some details about your video. Add a descriptive title to your video and a brief description that explains what viewers will see in the video.

Adding video from a protest, demonstration, or other event? Include the date and location.
Then, add “tags” to your video. Tags are keywords that are used when someone searches for a video. The better the tags you provide, the more likely someone will find your video in search results. Separate each tag with a space.
Then, select a category that your video falls into.
Select the level of privacy for your video.
A public video is open to anyone and everyone on YouTube. An unlisted video will not appear in YouTube’s search results. Only people who know the link to the video can see it. A private video is only available to visitors you invite.
Click “Save Changes.” You will see the message “Success: Your video settings will be saved once your video has finished uploading.”
STEP 9.
Under “Sharing options,” you will see the URL to your video. Next to Embed, you will see HTML code that you can copy and paste into your own website if you want to feature your video on your own page.
STEP 10.
You are all set! Don’t be surprised if your video isn’t immediately available - it may take YouTube a few minutes to process your uploaded video.
If you need to change or delete your video, click on your user name on the upper righthand corner of any page on YouTube. In the drop down menu, select “My Videos.” You will be directed to a page where you can manage your videos.
